Aquaculture operators must manage their impacts on the environment and remain within the thresholds and constraints set out by the consenting authorities. Before a new fish farm can be developed or an existing farm can be modified, it is generally necessary to carry out an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to identify and address potential impacts on the environment. With respect to medicinal treatments and solids waste arising from a farm site, the regulator requires modelling and prediction of their fate in the environment in order to determine acceptable limits of environmental impact that do not compromise the economic viability of the site.
