Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC)

Two sets of already extensively amended regulations were brought into force in 2000 under the Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) Act 1999 to implement the European Community Directive 96/61/EC on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC).

The fundamental philosophy of the IPPC Directive is to provide an integrated approach to environmental problems, avoiding the shifting of pollution discharges from one media to another via different sets of environmental control. PPC must address resource consumption, energy efficiency, raw materials usage, noise, accident prevention techniques, waste minimisation and recovery and restoration of site after use.
