Capacity Development for the Environment

BMT Cordah Ltd implements projects supported by the agencies in-country. We specialise in projects with a strong focus on capacity development for the environment. In this context we work closely with indigenous personnel to identify impediments to better management performance and identify the key institutional, training and technical changes that are required to improve capacity to manage the environment. Further, BMT Cordah has extensive experience in the provision of training and development of regulations, guidelines and procedures that assist improving local capacity. A particular strength lies in capacity-building for design and delivery of procedures for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA).

How does a newly independent country, with limited technical and managerial knowledge and expertise, create a viable functioning system of environmental management? Similarly, what kind of assistance does a country in transition to a market economy need to reform its legal, regulatory and institutional framework for environmental management?

BMT Cordah has worked with numerous governments and devolved administrations to help them manage their environment better. For example, our work in Kosovo focuses on creating an Environmental Impact Assessment system and solid waste management strategy that are in accordance with EU Directives. Other work in Azerbaijan, Romania and in the Russian Federation has concentrated on institutional change to promote more effective environmental management performance at national and regional levels.
