Over a two week period in Aberdeen, participants can attend two distinct, high quality specialist training programmes, providing a cost- and time-effective training opportunity. Each of the following courses can be attended separately, but we offer discounts to those participants attending the 7 day course plus either of the 3 day courses.

Environmental Management & Sustainable Development. 7 days: 11 – 19 September

An intensive 7-day training course that provides a practical understanding of the principles and techniques of environmental management within the framework of sustainable development. The course has been carefully structured to provide a programme that covers all aspects of environmental management for the oil & gas industry. A lively, stimulating and interactive course with a strong focus on exercises, structured discussion and simulation sessions.

Who should attend?

A wide range of personnel from the oil and gas industry, particularly environmental advisors, engineers, HSE representatives, environmental scientists and environmental studies advisors.

iema approved Internal EMS Auditor Course (UK). 3 days: 20 - 22 September

Successfully completing this 3-day course will enable participants to be effective members of an internal audit team. Provides a working understanding of the audit process in the context of Environmental Management Systems (EMS). Includes principles of auditing, types of environment audit, and the various techniques available to complete an audit effectively. Presentations interspersed with interactive group work structured around a case study of an oil and gas facility, including a simulated audit.

Who should attend?

Individuals who will be responsible for auditing and reviewing environmental management systems. Those seeking to register as an auditor under the iema auditor registration scheme will have the opportunity to gain points towards this.

Oil spill response. 3 days: 20 – 22 September

This 3-day course provides an overview of the response processes in the event of an oil spill on land or at sea, and enables those involved to understand how to conduct area assessments and the need for preventative measures.

Who should attend?

Individuals who require a good understanding of oil spill response, management and those HSE personnel whose remit is to provide preventative solutions, whether in the implementation of a Contingency Plan, or as part of a Response Unit. Potential members of an oil spill response team and those responsible for planning and logistics.

BMT CORDAH’S TRAINING TEAM

BMT Cordah has a strong team of trainers who between them have many years’ experience of project work for the oil and gas industry. This knowledge and experience informs the design and delivery of our programmes. The course directors are:

Gordon Picken is a Board Director of BMT Cordah Limited, with particular responsibilities for the overall development of the business and all of the company’s work for the offshore oil and gas industry. He has 26 years’ experience of providing environmental consultancy services to the world-wide oil and gas industry, and is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. Gordon has a PhD from the University of Aberdeen, gained as a result of five year’s research undertaken while employed by the British Antarctic Survey, and is an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Zoology at the University of Aberdeen.

Gordon has been responsible for the completion of over 35 full offshore EIAs, and several complex BPEOs, for both new developments and decommissioning programmes. Other work includes assessments of energy use and gaseous emissions, assessments of disposal options for drill cuttings, and training in environmental management and sustainability. He has also prepared two decommissioning plans for major North Sea installations, and his ongoing projects include decommissioning programmes, and environmental impact assessments.

David Sell, BSc, PhD, CBiol, MIBiol, is the Regional Director with responsibility for BMT Cordah’s Aberdeen Office. His responsibilities include project management, technical implementation, administration, marketing and the management of 24 technical staff. He has been an environmental consultant since 1982. With experience gained on a wide variety of commercial environmental projects on behalf of industry, development agencies and government, his main areas of expertise are in environmental impact and risk assessment and environmental management, primarily for the oil and gas industry. As well as projects in the UK, he has worked in Azerbaijan, Abu Dhabi, Argentina, Brazil, Cyprus, France, Holland, Indonesia, Norway, Portugal, Luxembourg, Cameroon and Nigeria. David is a Lead Tutor and Course Director for BMT Cordah’s iema approved Internal EMS Auditor course which he has delivered both in the UK and in Indonesia.

Colin James Colin James has a marine background and has been directly involved with oil spill response and associated environmental concerns for over twenty years. He was Master of the dedicated pollution control vessel , for operations in the North Sea , for a while before concentrating on Consultancy and Training. He has been involved with numerous coastal response projects involving site surveys, equipment recommendations, liaising with Government Departments, the writing of contingency plans and their implementation.

He has provided Oil Spill Response consultancy in Europe, Caspian Area, West Africa and the Far East. As an operator he has been involved in many oil spills as on-site manager, mostly in the UK, but also most notably as team leader during the Exxon Valdez clean-up operations. In 1998 he was responsible for writing OPRC contingency plans . In 1999 as a result of his OPRC work, he developed training courses to meet the new standard. These he has successfully given not just in the UK but also many countries at IMO Levels including Italy, Syria, Lebanon , Libya and Egypt.
